The Friends of the Alameda Free Library is a volunteer organization. The Alameda Friends group was founded in 1973 to increase public awareness of the Library as an essential part of the community and to support the Library in developing services and facilities.

In recent years, the Friends have worked toward the goal of a new Main Library. That goal will be realized in the Fall of 2006 when Alameda's new Library opens at the corner of Lincoln and Oak.

What else do the Friends do?

• Hold semi-annual sales of donated books to raise funds for Library programs.
• Fund children's and teen programs, including the Summer Reading Program and Halloween Spooky Night.
• Sponsor author night programs and other special events.
• Donate teen-oriented subscriptions to Juvenile Hall.
• Support the Alameda Reads literacy program.
• Serve as advocates for state and local funding for the Library.
• Publish the Friends newsletter with information about the latest Library and Friends events.
• Stimulate community awareness of all the Library services.
