Friends of the Alameda Free Library
NEWSLETTER
April 2005
Our 30th Year -- Vol. 30 #6

Statement of purpose: To increase public awareness of the library as an essential part of the community’s educational and cultural facilities. And to support and cooperate with the library in developing library services and facilities.

President’s Report

Teen Summer Reading Program. At our March meeting, the Friends voted to provide funding for the Library's third annual "Between the Covers" Teen Summer Reading Program. According to Librarian Karin Lundstrom, teens can participate in two ways. First, there's a contest wherein teens can help with the design of publicity materials. Then they can read at least three books and submit book reviews between June 18th and August 6th. The Friends' donation will pay for gift certificates and prizes for participants. We're pleased to be able to help with this pro-gram and hope many Alameda teens will participate.

Volunteers needed. Interested in being more active with the Friends? Contact Molly Skeen at 865-7439 for more information about these volunteer opportunities:

Jr. Friends Advisor. You would meet with the Jr. Friends once a month to help them plan their activities. The Jr. group usually puts on a monthly story reading/crafts program for the Children's Department and conducts an annual book sale. This could be a job-share position if two people are interested.

Bulletin Board Coordinator. We need someone to update the Friends bulletin board in the main library. Post announcements, pictures and newsletters to keep the public informed of our activities.

Internet Book Sales Coordinator. You would post collectibles on websites such as eBay and Amazon, correspond with buyers via email, and ship books to successful bidders.

Author Night. Local author Pam Chun will read from her new novel "When Strange Gods Call" at the Library's next author night program. Pam's book tells the story of family rivalries that threaten ill-fated lovers who defy generations of family hostility. Set in Hawaii, it weaves the history and myths of the tropical paradise into the tale of love lost and rediscovered. This program will take place at the Main Library on Tuesday, April 26th at 7:00 pm.

Have You Paid Your Dues?? Check the mailing label on the back of this newsletter to see if your dues are current. If it says "member through 2004," that means your membership has lapsed. We'll keep sending you a newsletter for a few months, but you won't receive tickets to the June book sale. To renew, just send your check along with the membership form to the Friends at P.O. Box 1024, Alameda, CA 94501. And be sure to check your areas of interest.

From the Minutes

Library Director. Susan thanked the Friends for all the help at the Groundbreaking (see photos attached). The library was closed three days in March for staff training on the new integrated library system DYNIX Horizon. The system will actually be operational in early April but its start-up should not interrupt library service.

Library Building Team. Honora reported they met this month and expect to meet again next month.

Officers. This is the meeting at which a nominating committee is appointed to bring a slate of officer nominees to the April meeting for election in May. Honora and Carol volunteered for the committee, Molly will locate a newer Friend to also serve on the committee.

Alameda Reads! Jordona Elderts sent us a letter thanking Friends for support of the Book Club. They are celebrating their 20th anniversary and asked if they could send out announcements to the Friends membership list. After discussion, it was decided that the Friends would undertake to send out the announcement for Alameda Reads! to avoid possible questions about the legality of mingling membership lists.

Teen Summer Reading Program. Friends approved $580 to underwrite this activity.

Treasurer. John continues to investigate the best way for Friends to grow our cash assets. He is looking into both investment funds and CDs for the highest yielding mix.

Membership. Peter reports we have 272 members paid for both 2004 and 2005. There are 21 new members for 2005.

Book Sales. Peter reported that the Friends could use the Carnegie for some storage but Su-san raised the concern that the building’s lift may not be up to the chore of carrying books. There could be better storage out at the Point but transport is a problem. The next sale is June 24–26 at the Al DeWitt O Club.

Junior Friends. Jo has asked to be relieved as a Junior Friends’ advisor effective the end of May. Jr. Friends had a successful rock/bug event for children and plans a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party April 16 at 2:00 p.m. at the Main Library featuring stories, crafts, cookies, and tea.

Building Fund. Kate recommended on behalf of the committee that this fund be renamed the Friends of the Library Fund. The motion was approved.

BALIS Notes

BALIS and Peninsula Library System (San Mateo County) hosted a successful workshop February 25 at the San Francisco library. Library supporters came from as far away as Sacramento to discuss how Friends and Foundation groups can better coordinate activities in their communities.

Friends are asked to put Wednesday, April 20 on their calendars as the next California Library Association Legislative Day in Sacramento. Join hundreds of other library supporters from throughout the state lobbying our legislators to continue support of libraries. More information and registration is available at www.cla-net.org.

Special Note from Alameda Reads!

Alameda Reads!, our adult literacy program, will be celebrating 20 years offering adult and family literacy services on the Island. So mark Saturday, June 4 on your calendar and prepare to join Jordona, Pat and all the tutors and students in a big celebration 4–7pm, Alameda Veterans Hall, 2203 Central Ave.
