Overall Review / CommentsBy
We have eaten at the Acapulco since 1961 have always found it to be excellect. I have worked all over the US and have eaten at other Mexican restaurants and have never found one that was as good. Our friends that come from out of state and also Canada always want to eat there. The Garlets familyThe Gsrlets Family

I love the shredded beef burritos. The sauce they come with is divine. The atmosphere is kind of like being in someone's basement in the back room area so I always order out. fredjoan

I think Acapulco strives for a genuine Spanish hacienda feeling in their restaurant--lots of textured white plaster and flickering lamps--and I liked the atmosphere. The food was okay, but our rice had been burnt and smelled like a the ashy end of a used cigar. (No, really.) But these little accidents happen in the best of places and they couldn't have been nicer--comped the dish and brought us a complimentary dessert. I think they strive for a more genuine Mexican flavor to their dishes, maybe a little too Chile-powder for those whose palate favors the Anglicized, swimming-in-cheesy-verde-sauce, Pinata style of food (uh, ME LOL). But I'd say give them a try.TJ

This has to be my favorite Alameda Mexican restaurant. I agree with everyone who doesn't understand the negative comments. The Chile Verde Burrito is AMAZING. The half order dinners are a lot of food for a great price (I rarely finish mine!) Chips are always warm upon arrival. The service is great and the atmosphere is very comfortable. I love that it is a "Family" business. Nicole A.

We eat here often. The Chili Verde Burritos are GREAT! Order the burrito ala carte and you won't leave hungry. They've added an outdoor patio in the back. Should be great come spring! Fast and friendly service if you have a short lunch hour mid-week. frequent diner

Friendly service is key to any good restaurant. The food is homemade and delicious, served hot. The sangria is tasty too. The family atmosphere is appealing and the family who own the place are genuinely glad to have you there. I'm hooked. Caterer in Disguise

This is probably the best standard-mexican type food in alameda- great chicken mole and the shredded beef burritos are excellent (the 2 burrito platter is good deal too). Just don't dine in the restaruant- old, moldy carpeting and bright, ugly lighting makes it feel like you are diningin somebody's smelly basement- not very appetizing... they need to overhaul the interior. But great place to order from.TJ

This is an older family owned restaurant with GREAT food. I've been going there for years, and now that I live out of the area, I make sure to schedule at least one meal there every time I visit.Theresa

The food is ok...but the menu is priced wrong you'd think when you order a burrito it will come with refriend beans or just beans..that is the main ingredient in this mexican dish....well at this place it don't and they charge EXTRA for it like others do for cheeze or bacon....and the manager is a retard that can benefit from going to management scholl or just taking some professional development courses....start with knowing the customer is always right...it may not hurt business if I never dine there again as I so exclamed but once the word gets around they will see their doors closing soon.DK

The best mexican food I have ever tasted! Far from frozen food as the last review said. My family and I go at least 2-3 times a month and would love to enjoy their food more!!! Everyone I know loves it too!Bay Area resident

This is the worst Mexican food I've ever tasted - and I've had a lot. Go somewhere else, even a frozen Mexican dinner is better.a concerned Alamedan

The Acapulco is the BEST restaurant in Alameda, hands down! I was fortunate enough to live two doors down from this restaurant for 3 years, and I frequented their door at least once a week. The family that runs the Acapulco is friendly, kind, and welcomes you into their family one meal at a time!Gwen Younes

I JUST CAN NOT UNDERSTAND THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS! THE ONLY THING I CAN SAY ABOUT THAT IS THEY MUST BE USE TO POOR QUALITY MEXICAN WHERE EVER THEY CAME FROM AND HAVE NO TASTEBUDS. ACAPULCO IS NOT ONLY THE BEST AUTHENTIC MEXICAN FOOD AROUND BUT HAS THE MOST COZIEST "HOMEY" FEEL. THE FAMILY ATOMOSPERE AND "FRESH" INGREDIANTS ARE PRICELESS! THERE IS NO WHERE ELSE I WOULD RATHER GO FOR MEXICAN THEN THE FAMOUS ACAPULCO RESTAURANT! I GUESS YOU CAN'T PLEASE THEM ALL...Katie

This restaurant is quite good for what it is. That is to say that if you are seeking traditional mexican food, this is not the spot. Acapulco offers a more Americanized mexican food, which is understandable since they've been around since the times before there were taquerias at every block and so they had to adapt in order to accomodate more people. The food is good, but don't expect traditional mexican food. VIctoria F

I can't understand the negative posts about this little place. It's always bustling, people obviously love it, and for what it is, it's FANTASTIC. Don't expect healthy, don't expect greaseless. Expect a tasty meal- and you'll be bringing half of it home with you for lunch the next day! A tip: smile at the cashier just right and you'll leave with a tootsie pop in your mouth. Keep it up, Acapulcos... you win for yummiest unhealthy mexican dinner!!!!!Deirdre Freeman

I'm a lifelong resident of Alameda and have eaten at least once a month at the Acapulco. I absolutely love the food and for the amount you get for the money you can hardly call it expensive. The staff are polite and hard working and I love the family type atmosphere. I'll be retiring to South Carolina in about a year, any chance of getting the recipe for your chili rellanos?Linda Faria

Sounds like this used to be a good place (like 20 yrs ago)...I've heard great things from native Alamedans but my 2 experiences here have been terrible. I could make a better burrito with 2 slices of wonder bread and and some pace picante sauce.John

Lots of good food for little money, good service, and their wine margaritas are very convincing. Just don't order a full dinner unless you expect to eat it for a week! YUM.Hockey Chick

As a soCal native, I KNOW good Mexican food when I have it and this place certainly DOESN'T have it. Mediocre food - I hate when everything is bathed in red or green sauce. The "sangira" is nasty, the salsa is thin and notfresh, and some times the chips are cold out of the bag. The plates come out all plastered from being under a heat lamp... If you need a fix and nothing else is open go for it, if you don't know any better you'll love it, but if you know good Mexican, stay away!A Reeves

this is the type of place you go to once and that's enough. there was nothing exceptional about the food, service, or atmosphere. nothing bad, either, but no real draw to go back. they don't have a full bar, so they make these wine cooler margaritas that taste like oversweetened frozen kool-aid. the salsa was not bad, very runny, overall, just nothing impressive. j m

I have been gone since 1978 and I still have not found a restaurant that makes Chile Relleno like Acapulco. They are the best! This review isn't allowing me to put more than 3* & they deserve the max!!Theresa

An Alameda institution, this restaurant serves old-style Mexican food and does a good job. The food is good, the service adequate. The atmosphere is lacking, parking can be tough for Alameda standards with its small parking lot and inadequate street parking. This is a very popular place because it's been here so long, so it can be a bit tough to get into on weekend evenings. ddddgee

If the chips aren't fresh and the salsa comes out of a bottle/can, you're in trouble. Acapulco has neither. There's no excuse for not using fresh, high-quality ingredients.jpc

I grew up in Alameda going to the Alcapulco at least once a month then after 43 yrs moved to North Carolina. I miss going to the Alcapulco so much. Even after all those years the food has not changed nor has the freindly faces and great service. When I come home for a week I make it in for dinner at least twice. Love you guys, keep up the great work. jvang

I fell in love with my first, bur not last, visit to Acapulco Rest; that was in 1964. It was and is the best thing about Alameda. Wherever I go I can not find the food, service or price to match this fine little haven of peace from a world gone money hungery. I have seen the building change into what it is today, a real spark of personality that I have not found anywhere, from Hong Kong to North Carolina. Now that I have said my peace I thing I'll make it over to Acapulco this Sunday for Dinner.Rev George Earl Gray

THE ACAPULCO, USED TO BE ONE OF THE BEST PLACES TO GO FOR A SIT DOWN-HOME STYLE MEXICAN MEAL, AND YOU ALWAYS TOOK SOME HOME. (LG. PORTIONS). BUT UNFORTUNATELY, AFTER THE PASSING OF MOST OF THE FAMILY MEMBERS, THE QUALITY OF THE FOOD HAS GONE DOWN. THE LAST TIME I WENT THERE (RIGHT AFTER THE SISTER PASSED), THE FOOD AND SERVICE WAS TERRIBLE. I HOPE THAT THEY CAN GET BACK TO THE WAY THEY USED TO BE, IT WOULD BE A LOST TO ANYONE WHO'S NEVER GOT TO EXPERIENCE THE REAL ACAPULCO RESTAURANT. I'VE BEEN GOING THERE FOR THE PAST 20 PLUS YEARS. New to Alameda, but not to Mexican food. Had to try an Alameda legend. Honestly just an average Mexican food, that's been around for 50 years. Heading to La Pinata next, to settle the taco controversy...Big Guy

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Alameda. My husband and I eat here probably once every two weeks. The staff is excellent and friendly, feel like family! I recommend the Chili Verde dinner. For those that have said the prices are high... have you been to Chevy's? Much more flavor than La Pinata in my opinion and you get more food!Stacey
